Petroglyph Photos

Rarely seen photographs from Maha'ulepu, Kaua'i (rite).

Usually buried underneath the beach, they are exposed once every twenty - thirty years for a few days or weeks after a large "Kona" storm strips the sand off the beach.

Left image is a human figure with a coconut tree growing out of it's head. To the rite is a male human figure with a small female figure attached, possibly a daughter.

An elaborate canoe petroglyph and other figures (rite) from Olowalu, Maui. The canoe has a sail, outrigger, steersman, and tassel.

The tassel marked the canoe as double-hulled and belonged to a chief or (ali'i).

The site is easily found, but badly vandalized.

"Birdmen" petroglyphs from Kukui Point (left) on

Lana'i.

Part-human, part animal petroglyphs may have represented aumakua, or personal gods.
