Kaua'i Tips
When it's rainy or overcast on the north or east side of
the island, drive to the west side, or Po'ipu on the south
shore. It's often sunny there when it's rainy everywhere else.
Fair-skinned? Just off the plane? Limit your sun
exposure to an hour or so the first couple days of your vacation.
Have fun on Kaua'i, but be safe, too. Swim, surf,
snorkel or dive only where other people are doing the same.
Avoid stream and river mouths. Take this tip seriously.
Monk seals haul themselves onto Kaua'i's beaches to give
birth, and rest after feeding. They are endangered, and need to be left
undisturbed. Stay at least 10 body lengths away from the seals!!!
In Hawai'i, it's customary to remove
your shoes before entering someone's house.
On Kaua'i, people give directions with landmarks instead
of names and addresses. Expect to hear "take the third
driveway after the mango tree," not "1234 Awesome Beach Dr."
Since Kaua'i is an island, people give directions with
"mauka" (towards the mountains), and "makai", (towards the ocean).
Pronunciation Tip: Vowels in Hawaiian are pronounced
much like those in Spanish. A = ah, E = ay, I = ee, O = oh,
and U = oo. The okina (') is a slite pause, like in uh-oh. So "Pe'e
Road" is pronounced pay-ay road, and "Oneone Rd" is
pronounced oh-nay oh-nay, not wun-wun.
Going up to Waimea Canyon or the Kalalau Lookout?
It'll be 10 - 15 degrees cooler up there, and it's often windy.
Bring a lite jacket or sweatshirt. The same holds for tour boat rides.
